Updated:

The majority of event venues in the city of Rio de Janeiro are concentrated in the Zona Sul or Barra da Tijuca areas. The Zona Sul area is closer to the Santos Dumont airport, a popular destination for domestic flights, and is comprised of several neighbourhoods with event venues.

Rio de Janeiro is one of the most important tourist destinations in Brazil and over the last years has received significant improvements to infrastructure due to being a host city to the 2016 Summer Olympics and 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Aside from the expansion of the international airport Galeão, and of the public transportation network with the inauguration of new BRT and metro stretches and the light rail line VLT, the city also had an increase in hotel capacity. These investments boosted Rio de Janeiro’s potential as a city ready to host events of all sizes, competing with São Paulo, which doesn’t have as many leisure options for business tourists compared to Rio.

However, even before hosting these larger events, the city was already well established as a hub for important business events within certain industries, especially in oil and gas, telecommunications and the creative economy, the latter one with a strong focus on the audiovisual market.
